Myths & realities about supplements and natural products for children

May 30, 2024Félix Daigle

As a healthcare professional, I know that any preconceived ideas surrounding supplements and natural products for children are a delicate subject to tackle, and that the final decision, whatever it may be, undoubtedly rests with the parents. Today, therefore, I shall endeavour to offer you objective recommendations based on current scientific data, which may guide you towards possible questions to ask your doctor, or to keep in mind as your children's eating habits change.

First of all, it's important to emphasize that if your child has a varied and balanced diet, he or she should normally obtain all essential nutrients through the diet, with the exception of vitamin D, which is often prescribed from birth in many regions, notably North America and the Nordic countries.

However, supplementation may become necessary if your child doesn't consume enough of certain foods, which could lead to nutritional deficiencies impacting his or her development.

I'll therefore touch on a few supplements that may be relevant to consider, while stressing the importance of consulting a health professional, such as a doctor or pediatrician, before undertaking any supplementation.

Protein powder:

Protein powder is a super interesting option to optimize the diet of children who are sometimes a little pickier, or who consume little meat.

Protein is crucial for growing children, providing the building blocks for muscle development, bone health and immune system function. In addition to supporting physical growth, protein plays an essential role in many biological processes, such as hormone regulation and the formation of new tissue. Adequate protein intake therefore helps ensure healthy development in children and adolescents.

The important thing is to make it fun! Let the child select the flavor of their choice and create their own smoothie, or make a homemade protein ice cream!

Vitamin D:

Important for bone and immune health, vitamin D is often recommended for children, especially as its intake is limited by diet and sun exposure. It is often taken in liquid form (drops). In fact, this supplement is generally suggested in hospitals from birth!

Probiotics: Probiotics promote intestinal health, and can be beneficial for some children, especially those suffering from digestive disorders (colic or other). Probiotics can also help boost the immune system! However, this is not necessary for all children. Discuss with your healthcare professional.

Omega 3 :

Essential for brain development, omega-3s may be recommended for children, especially if they don't consume enough oily fish in their diet (salmon, sardines, etc.). I highly recommend this supplement in this crucial period of brain development. Here are my favorite Omega 3s for cognitive health:

Multivitamins:

For children with restricted or selective eating habits(picky eaters!), multivitamins can be considered to fill the nutritional gaps.

A look back at the many products that boost the immune system

I know, it's discouraging all over to see our child always sick at daycare, but it's a normal process whose ultimate goal is to build their immune system. That said, I think it's important to debunk some of the myths associated with "immune" supplements for children.

For example, while vitamin C can be important, it's vital to focus on a balanced diet rather than relying solely on supplements. A robust immune system also depends on other factors such as sleep and healthy lifestyle habits, and not just on "anti-cold" products, which may be more marketing tools than real solutions.

In conclusion, supplementation in children should be approached with caution and under the supervision of a healthcare professional. A balanced diet remains the main focus when it comes to optimizing their health. With a perfect diet, optimal sleep and moderate sun exposure, no supplement is essential, but in reality this is rarely the case... So get informed, and make the decisions that make the most sense for your child. Don't hesitate to consult one of our in-store advisors for more information.
